When a person chooses cremation, the ashes are given to the family, who have several choices: conservation in an urn or scattering in the garden of memories. Cinerary urns are placed in the columbarium.
The columbarium, a cinerary monument for families of the deceased who have chosen cremation
- Derived from the Latin columba (pigeon niche), the columbarium is a monument designed to house the urns in which the ashes of the deceased are deposited. This is why they are made up of individual compartments. Each cell, closed by a door (secured by some service providers to protect its contents), can accommodate one or more urns.
It can be built as a semi-erect or elevated structure, as a collective or individual unit. In addition to a columbarium, the commune may also choose to provide families with "cavurnes" or "buried urns", which require a much larger footprint over time.
There are many possibilities in terms of size, shape and material used. Granimond recommends that local authorities choose granite over concrete. Granite has many qualities, both aesthetic and technical. A noble, durable material, it can be used to create high-quality columbaria and other cinerary monuments.
What's more, unlike concrete, which fears humidity, granite is highly resistant to external conditions and requires minimal maintenance: a simple dusting is all it takes to preserve its natural beauty.
Meeting families' expectations with respect and decency
- Granimond has developed a wide range of columbariums to meet the specific needs of local authorities, from the smallest to the largest in terms of population. In terms of legislation, communes with a population of over 2,000 are also required to provide " at least one cinerary site for the cremated remains of the deceased ", as stipulated by the law of December 19, 2008, which came into force on January 1, 2013. However, whatever the size of the commune, offering places for remembrance, meditation and a final farewell is a mark of respect for families and the deceased who have chosen cremation.
