What is the definition of a columbarium? How does it work?
A columbarium is a piece of furniture made up of compartments. It holds cinerary urns containing the ashes of the deceased, after cremation.
Cremation is the process of burning and reducing to ashes the bodies of the deceased. It should not be confused with incineration, which is used for waste.
Following cremation, families can scatter the ashes, bury the urn, place it in a cavurne (burial vault) or place it in a columbarium. A cell contains one or more urns. Boxes are usually made of granite, with a plaque on the door showing the name, surname, year of birth and death of the deceased.
The columbarium is usually located in a communal cemetery.
Unlike traditional burials, columbaria are built above ground.
As with a grave, it is necessary to purchase a concession for a columbarium from the town hall of the cemetery's commune. The average length of a columbarium concession is 15 to 30 years.
Families can choose between two types of columbarium: collective (cinerary space with several plots) or individual (single plot).
The columbarium is the perfect place for families to pay their respects. Granimond offers you products designed, for the most part, with individual overhangs allowing flowering for each family.
Communes with more than 2,000 inhabitants are required to have a columbarium, since the Law of December 19, 2008.
Granimond is well aware of this legal obligation, and offers customized layouts to town halls and local authorities.
What columbariums does Granimond offer?
Since 1981, we've been building on our expertise in the cinerary field and our know-how in granite. We support local authorities in the creation of quality columbariums.
We create cinerary arrangements adapted to your surface area and your needs.
All our columbaria are made of solid granite. We chose this material for its durability. In fact, it is highly resistant to weathering and external aggression. Granite requires little maintenance (dusting or simple cleaning). What's more, granite comes with a 10-year warranty.
We are also committed to the aesthetic aspect of our columbariums (various colors and shapes), with a strong emphasis on integration into the site and restocking in harmony with existing furniture. We supply straight, curved, circular and spherical columbariums, as columns or on the ground. Our models are modular, adaptable in time and space, and hold 2 to 4 cinerary urns per cell. Their opening is secured by tamper-proof screws (6-sided with brass studs) fitted to the lids.
We offer a wide range of columbaria:
- Semi-elevated columbaria: These models are unique in that they can be expanded. Floors are added to existing columbaria to accommodate several families.
The various shapes of our columbariums allow you to create harmonious spaces adapted to your surface area. - Raised columbariums : These columbariums are built high and can be adapted to accommodate several families. These modern, harmonious cinerary arrangements encourage families to reflect.
- Ground columbariums : These creations are made up of buried or unburied cinerary concessions. These models are ideal to complement an elevated columbarium.
- Entry-level columbariums: These simple, sober arrangements can be adapted to your budget.
- Tailor-made columbariums: Would you like a customized project for your community? Do you have specific requirements?
Granimond can create a customized columbarium to meet your needs.
