What are memorial gardens for, and who do they honour?

Cremation is a very personal choice, and one that more and more French people are embracing. After the ceremony, the body's ashes are collected in a cinerary urn. They can then be scattered in the cemetery's memorial garden.

Gardens of remembrance: cinerary spaces dedicated to the scattering of ashes

Unlike columbaria, which are reserved for the conservation of ashes, gardens of remembrance are places dedicated to the scattering of ashes. These cinerary spaces must be designed and built by local authorities. Since January 1, 2013, they have been compulsory for all municipalities with a population of 2,000 or more, in the same way as columbaria.

The garden of remembrance is a collective place, generally designed on a small area of a few square meters of the cemetery. After cremation, thecinerary urn is handed over to the person in charge of the funeral, then the ashes of the deceased are scattered in this area.

Composed of a sump, marble pebbles and granite borders, the garden of remembrance can be adapted to the size of the plot available to the commune, as well as to the demographics of its community. Granimond also offers a patented scattering space, the "Lacus Regia", with a water sprinkling process that allows the ashes to be carried under the pebbles.

It is also possible to install a remembrance basin, to bury the ashes instead of scattering them in the sump.

Gardens of remembrance: places for sharing and remembrance

The garden of remembrance is more than just a space for scattering the deceased. It is above all a place of meditation for the loved ones of the deceased. The fact that it is a collective space may not satisfy all families. The column or book of remembrance, listing the identity of the deceased, is not always enough to personalize the scattering space. For all families to be able to honor the memory of their loved ones, it is essential to provide a space that is conducive to rest and relaxation.

Since 1981, Granimond has been helping local authorities create their memorial gardens. We have unique expertise in designing and installing signage that has become indispensable. Steles, books of remembrance, broken columns or simple commemorative plaques- our extensive range is made entirely of solid granite. Depending on the size of your community and your needs, we can customize these scattering spaces to offer them aesthetic appeal, elegance and technical sophistication.

To ensure that families are comfortable when paying their respects to the deceased, we also create granite benches, tables, fountains and washbasins. Our expertise, both technical and human, has enabled us to support and guide more than 6,000 communes in the creation of landscaped, functional gardens of remembrance.
